_Golden Wedding Notice Advertiser 9 September 1898 Mr.
and Mrs. John Yates, of Park-street, Hyde Park, celebrated their golden
wedding, and their son, Mr. E. Yates, of Port Augusta, with Mrs. Yates
and family, joined to celebrate their silver wedding, with the "old
folks at home," at the same time and place. The family of one son and
two daughters, Mrs. James Hancock, of Snowtown, and Mrs. G. Dennis, of
"Clare, with their husbands- and most of their children, as well as
many friends; and two old shipmates, Mr. and Mrs. G. Davis, were
present. After dinner several presents were given by the family and
friends. A letter of congratulation from Mr. John Yate's brother. Dr.
'William Yates, of Chicago, America, was read. Songs, readings,
recitations, and games occupied the evening, and many good 'wishes were
expressed for the happiness of the old couple and their children. Mr.
John Yates was born at Nottingham, England, on May 8,1825. Mrs. Yates
was born at New Basford, a suburb of Nottingham, on March 1,1826. They
were married on July 26, 1848, and sailed for Australia in the ship
Lincoln, arriving at Port Adelaide on December 6 after a voyage of 79
days. Moving to Encounter Bay they met some friends of their youthful
days, Mr. and Mrs. E. Robinson. Turning his attention to education, and
passing the required examination, Mr. Yates opened a school at Middleton
with 50 pupils, and after three and a half years' residence moved to
Inman Valley. Here he served 14 years under the Education Department.
During that time two of his daughters were married on the same day by
the Rev. C. Hodge, of Encounter Bay. Mr. .Yates retired from educational
duties in 1884.
