Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 31st October 1914 The death took place at the public hospital, Streaky Bay, early on Wednesday morning last, of Mrs Ellen Mary Bates, an old resident known throughout the length and breadth of the West Coast for consideration and acts of kindness in cases of sickness. To many she has been an angel of mercy, and especially this was the case in the early days, when it was often often impossible to obtain a doctor's services, and it was then that Mrs Bates was all the more ready to do what she could - a no mean service either. She was born in England, and her residence on the Coast extends back 52 years. Her husband, the late Mr. Charles Bates, predeceased her by some ten years. Four daughters are present living, viz., Mrs John Feltus, Mrs E.J. Bruce and Mrs. T. Redding, of Streaky Bay, and Mrs Bevistock of Port Augusta, while there are also 25 grand-children and 17 great grand-children. Mrs Bates had not been well for about three weeks, but was able to get about up to Sunday, when she took a bad turn and had to be taken to hospital, the cause of her death being bronchitis and internal troubles. The funeral took place, to the Streaky bay Cemetery, on Thursday afternoon, Canon Howard conducting the service at the grave. The pall bearers were Messrs F. Campbell, J.H. Cotton, T.O. Mudge jnr., and H. Mudge jnr., while Mr H.P. Holt carried out the mortuary arrangements. The deceased was 75 years of age, and as she lived practically the whole of her life in Australia (coming out when only 18 months old) her experiences were unique, and further details of them will appear in these columns later.

Sudden Death of an Old Colonist.— By the death of Mr. Edward Bowels, of Payneham, on Wednesday evening, April 6, the colony lost another of those very early colonists whose ranks are almost daily becoming thinner. The deceased gentleman had been suffering for years from heart disease, and was under the treatment of Dr. Ellison, On Friday last Mr. and Mrs. Bowels went for a health trip south wards, and returned to town on Wednesday evening. A Payneham car was waiting when the train arrived, and the old couple got into it to go home, when Mr. Bowels suddenly leaned back his head and died. Upon the car arriving opposite Dr. Ellison's house on North-terrace it was stopped, and the deceased was removed to the doctor's surgery. The ambulance van was sent for, and the body was taken to the deceased's residence, Payneham. Dr. Ellison, who gave a certificate as to cause of death, attributes the sudden demise to heart disease. Mr. Edward Bowels was born in Kent, and was sixty-two years of age. With his parents he arrived in the colony in the ship Resource in December, 1838, and in 1840 moved to Payneham. Later he left home and travelled to Mount Gambier, and thence to Victoria in search of gold. He was on the Bendigo Diggings in 1850, and was one of the party who discovered the Pleasant Creek Diggings. Returning to South Australia he opened a butcher's shop at Walkerville, and twenty-six years ago he bought the land at Payneham where he resided, and started the business of a market gardener, which he carried on till his death. Deceased was well known in the district of Payneham, and was much respected. He was very fond of shooting, and the day before he died he shot a large number of teal and duck on the Murray and brought them with him to town. He leaves a widow, two married daughters, and four sons, two of whom are married. His only brother lives at Swan Hill, Victoria, and three sisters reside in South Australia. One is the wife of Mr. C. BRYANT Robert Joseph
_Death Notice Port Lincoln Times 4th Janaury 1940 Death of Mr. R.J. Bryant Another Link with the Early Port Lincoln Passes Mr Robert Joseph Bryant died on December 22 at the age of 76 yeras. He was proceeding home with his son Jack in Mr. A. Blackman's car, when he quietly passed away from a heart attack. Mr Bryant's father was a remittance man from England, who among other properties was interested in Warrow and Grantala in the early days. He was also at one time on Flinders Island near Elliston. It was on the island that Mr. R.J. Bryant was born. At a later period he assisted his father in a cheese making enterprise at Warrow. This factory ran in association with Mr. J. King, who was also a man with good connections in the old country. Mr Bryant later married a daughter of the late Chas. Porter, and was for a number of years one of Port Lincoln's oystermen, both as a partner of Mr Fraser and as owner of the cutter Sultana. When the railway construction commenced at Port Lincoln, Mr Bryant at once availed himself the opportunity and entered the employment. He retired at the age of 65 in 1927. Mrs Bryant had predeceased her husband, but there are five sons and one daughter living. They are Messrs, Robt. G, John, Thomas, F. William and Terry, and Mrs Rowley King (Kath). Mr. F.W. BUCK Henry
Death The Advertiser 13 January 1905 DEATH AT THE ADELAIDE GAOL. On Thursday morning the City Coroner (Dr. W. R. Smith) held an inquest at the Adelaide Gaol on the body of Henry Buck. The deceased, who was sentenced to a term of 14 days' imprisonment, died at the institution on Wednesday. Mary Elizabeth Buck, licensee of the Tanner's Arms, Bowden, widow of the deceased, said her late husband was 39 years of age. He had been in good health during the last 12 months, excepting that he had taken too much spirits. George William Henry Norcock, keeper of the Adelaide Gaol said the deceased was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, on a warrant of commitment on an unsatisfied judgment summons. On the morning of January 9 he was shaking from the eftects of drink. On the morning of January 10 he said he was better, but in the evening he became delirious, and was taken to the padded cell. On the following morning the witness was called at 7.20, but when we reached the cell the man was dead. The chief warder took him to the cell. The removal was not by doctor's orders. It was a custom in the prison if a person became violent to remove him to the padded cell, but there was no rule requiring that this should be done. Dr. Bickle said he had seen the deceased on January 10, and found that he was suffering from the effects of drink, although he appeared rational. He had made a post-mortem examination, and found that death was due to heart failure, accelerated by the hot weather and drink. The jury, without retiring, found that the deceased died from natural causes, namely, heart failure, on January 11.
The Advertiser 17 January 1905 MRS. HENRY BUCK tenders her sincere THANKS to the Keeper and Warders of His Majesty's Gaol for their great kindness and sympathy shown her in her late sad bereavement; also to all kind Friends for their expressons of sympathy and kindness shown.
