The deceased was one of the early settlers in the Lone Gum area after the 1914-18 war, and in the early days was closely associated with every progressive movement in the settlement. Miss M.A. Seamark, who died at her residence at Murat Bay recently, was born in 1854 at Cliffe-at-Hoo, near Rochester, Kent, England, and trained as a nurse at the Nightingale school, St Thomas Hospital, London, and was transfered from there to Highgate infirmary under the Nightingale committee, where she soon became a charge nurse over 30 patients. She was afterwards charge nurse over 60 patients at the Royal sea bathing infirmary, Margate, Kent. The deceased was one of the forst 100 who formed the royal british nurses' association under the Presidency of the Princess Christian, a daughter of Queen Victoria, and had the honor of receiving her badge from the Princess personally. She was matron of the college hospital, "Erith", Kent, for 3 years, and was 3 years a district nurse at Bridport, Dorsetshire. The rest of her nearly 50 years' career had been taken up with private nursing, with the nursing sisters at Berkhampstead, and from the Royal British and other institutions in London, from where she had gone to nurse the wealthy people of all parts of England, also in Wales and Ireland. The late Miss Seamark had also been to the South of France, and while staying in Cannes had the honor of a personal acknowledgment from King Edward, then the Prince of Wales, at the english Church. The deceased came to Australia about 9 years ago, when she joined the Australian branch of the royal British institution, and had visited nearly all parts of south Australia, including the 100 miles, trip in a German waggon to the mission station at Oodnadatta. She arrived at Murat Bay in 1914 and resided here until her death. She was 72 years of age.

Death Notice Chronicle 1st December 1917 Private ANDREW WILLIAM SHILLABEER was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Shillabeer, of 'Attyford,' Onetree Hill. He was born and lived all his life in the district, and was much esteemed for his gentlemanly and kindly disposition. He enlisted as soon as he was old enough, and left for the front in November, 1916. During his training he had two severe attacks of pneumonia, but eventually recovered, and was sent to France, where he was killed in action on October 8, shortly before attaining his 21st year, A younger brother is serving with the troops abroad.

Death Notice The Register 27 July 1903 Old and Exhausted Jamestown, July 24 Mea Singh, an Indian hawker, aged about 84 years was found dead in a cellar on the property of Mr. G. Napper, close to Jamestown, yesterday. T. Donahue, a swagman, discovered the body and reported the matter to M.C. Dwyer. Death appeared to have taken place without a struggle as the body was in a recumbent position alongside the man's basket and pack containing goods, and a hawker's licence. Dr. Aitken on examining the body was satisfied that the man died through exhaustion and old age, and he gave a certificate for burial accordingly.

Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 15th December 1917 The death took place on Saturday morning last, of Mrs Elizabeth Smith of Jessie's Flat, Streaky Bay, a resident of the district for 45 years. The deceased lady, who had not been well for a long time, had to take to her bed three weeks previously, and for the latter half of that period her condition gave her family great concern. All her life she had been of a most active disposition, and calls upon her in cases of sickness and trouble were never in vain. In this respect, above all others, she proved one of the district's mainstays in the old days, and many people have great cause to remember her good offices. A strenuous life left its effects, and this told on her constitution in the end. She was born on January 15th, 1852, at Willunga, the third daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Sampson Bastian, and was, therefore, in her 65th year. Her girlhood was spent at Willunga, and at 20 she came to the West Coast with the late Mr John Mudge, from whose house she was married about a year later, on December 25th, 1873, to the late Mr John Smith, who died on May 1st, 1913. She leaves a family of six daughters (another having predeceased her) and four sons, as follows - Mesdames John Speed, E.J. Kelsh, E.H. Campbell, J.F. Gardner and D.W. Arnot and Miss Minnie Smith, Mr Harry B. Smith, Corp. M.J. Smith (Palestine), Mr. F.H. Smith and Pte J. Smith (England). There are also, 27 grand children. The funeral, which took place to the Streaky Bay cemetery on Sunday afternoon, was attended very largely. The service was conducted by Rev. Barrett, of the Methodist Church; the pall bearers were Messrs H.F., A.E., and F.L. Kelsh, T. Mudge senr.,, Jas Williams and John Feltus; and the mortuary arrangements were capably carried out by Messrs O.M. and G.P. Willcock. Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 1st December 1917 Another West Coast pioneer (one of the very oldest) has passed away, in the person of Mrs Emma Costello Sproll, relict of the late Mr Frederick Sproll, the death taking place at her son's residence, Streaky Bay, shortly after midday on Thursday. The deceased was born in Scotland in 1849, and at the age of 17 landed in South Australia, being, therefore, a colonist of 51 years. Two years later she was married, and went to reside at Fowler's Bay with her husband, who was employed in pastoralist pursuits there. Later the family resided at various parts of the Coast, and for two or three years in Adelaide, until 30 years ago, when they settled at Streaky Bay, and here she lived up until the time of her death. Mr Sproll predeceased her by 17 years, and two daughters (Mesdames R. Anderson and A Matten) are also dead. Three sons (Messrs Frank and Robert and Pte. Fred - now in France) and two daughters (Mesdames M. Allen and T. West, of Fowler's Bay) survive her. Not withstanding the rigor of pioneering days, she was hale and hearty until a few years ago, but latterly had become very frail, and during the past six weeks had been confined to her bed. The funeral took place to the Streaky Bay cemetery yesterday afternoon, Rev. Dainty officiating at the grave. Bereavement Notice West Coast Sentinel 15th December 1917 Mr and Mrs R.H.
