GOODE Samuel
Funeral Notice The South Australian Advertiser 23 April 1859 The Late Mr. Samuel Goode.-On the afternoon of Good Friday the remains of this much respected colonist were interred in the North-road Cemetery, a very large number of persons, friends and relatives of the deceased, following him. to the grave. Mr. Goode, who died on the 20th of April, after a short illness, at the age of 64 years, had been in the colony about eight years, having previously resided at Leominster, in Herefordshire. On the funeral procession arriving at Christchurch, it halted, and the corpse, met at the door by the Bishop and Archdeacon, was borne into the sacred edifice, where the order for the burial of the dead was performed in a very impressive manner. The mournful cortege, headed by the Bishop, the Archdeacon, and other clergymen, then proceeded slowly, followed by a long train of vehicles, to the Cemetery abovementioned, where the Bishop and Archdeacon completed the funeral rites. Mr. Goode has died sincerely lamented by very many. His urbanity of manner and perpetual readiness to perform a kind action wherever and whenever needed, endeared him to an extensive circle of friends, by all of whom his loss will be much deplored. Amongst those by whom his former usefulness will be missed are the agriculturists of Adelaide and its vicinity. Mr. Goode was one of the most experienced and practical farmers in the colony, and his judgment was frequently sought in consequence. For a short time he held office as a Councillor in the metropolitan Corporation, but his peaceful disposition scarcely fitted him for an arena which he entered upon reluctantly and quitted with out regret.

Death Notice Advertiser and Register 4th April 1931 GRAVES.—On the 30th March. Vincent Henry, beloved husband of Mary Graves, of Nadda, aged 40 years. Requiescat In pace. Interred In the Catholic Cemetery, West-terrace, on Friday afternoon, 3rd Inst.
A TRAGEDY OF THE BUSH Popular Farmer Found Dead in Dense Bush With Gun at His Feet After some days of fruitless search in the wilderness of scrub in the Nadda district the dead body of Vincent Henry Graves was found under a sandhill by farmers A. J. Blum, P. Burridge and Clark. Nine inches from Mr. Graves' feet was a discharged shot sun. A ghastly wound in his head testified as to how he had come by his death. Returning from the war with a constitutlon half ruined by malaria of a malignant form contracted in the valley of the Jordon, Mr. Graves took, up a farm in the Nadda-Taplan district. He married seven years ago and had two children, a girl and a boy. His farm was situated about five miles south east from Taplan on the Nadda road. It was a lonely district, with scattered farmers living some distance off. On Monday morning Mrs. Graves and her two children left the farm to stay with a friend at Paruna. She attended a Catholic service held at the Paruna. district. Her husband had said that while she was away he would work in the paddocks stump picking. About 5 p.m. on Tuesday Mrs. Graves returned to the farm, and at once noticed that since she had left the homestead no one had occupied the place. She became nervous and feared something had happened to her husband. At periods, she said, her husband had attacks of malaria. These left him very weak and depressed. He . had also felt keenly the depression in Australia. But he had never given up hope of providing for his family, and had worked the farm well. Mrs. Graves searched the house thoroughly and missed a double barreled shot gun from one of the rooms. This frightened her, as she had never known her husband to take the gun out with him before when working. She then searched a chest of drawers and found that £30 in notes was also missing. Mrs. Graves then went across to the farm of Mr. A. J. Blum, who at once said that a search for the missing man must be commenced, and got in touch with another farmer, Mr. P Burridge. By this time night had fallen. Phone messages were then sent away to certain people in Adelaide telling them of the farmer's disappearance from home. Mrs. Graves said she would not phone the Loxton police until she was satisfied that something had happened her husband.
THE SEARCH COMMENCES At daylight a search of the surrounding district was commenced by Messrs. Blum, Burridge and Clark. By mid-day a wide scope of country had been covered by the horsemen. After dinner the search was continued, the trackers being baulked at times by the light rain which had fallen since the farmer was missed. The search party traversed rough sand hill country, covered with dense stunted mallee and porcupine. At sundown they were moving along under the east side of a sand hill when they noticed something between the porcupine growing on the ridge. "It proved to be the body of our neighbour", said one of the searchers. A bee line was then made for TapIan, and Sergeant, Northridge, was informed of the occurrence. He immediately despatched Mounted Constable Kuchenmeister and Kaehne to investigate. They arrived at the Graves farm after dark and at once made for the scene of the tragedy in company with thesearch party. By the aid of torches if was ascertained that no other footprints than those of the deceased had been In the vicinity since the fatality had taken place. Graves had walked, into the porcupine ridge from the north. He lay on his back, with the stock of the gun nine inches from his feet. Mr. W. J. Hammond, J.P. acted as coroner, was present when the police made their investigation. The right barrel of the gun had been discharged and the full force of it had entered the head of the farmer. The left barrel had a live cartridge in it, and the trigger at full cock. Between the legs of the dead was a forked stick, which had been stuck in the ground. The rain had caused some rust on the gun, proving it had lain there for some days. There was no other marks of violence other than the gunshot wound on the body. Mr. Graves had on an old military tunic. In one of his pockets were found two £10 notes and two £5 notes There were also three live cartridge like the one used. The police then made a stretcher out of mallee, and with the help of those present carried the body to the farm house. The coroner, after reading their report said that an inquest was unnecessary. He was satisfied deceased had come to his own death by a gunshot wound self inflicted. He wished to compliment those gentlemen who had assisted to find the body, and also the police in the manner in which they had carried out their enquiries. Mr. Graves was one of the most popular farmers in the district. In Loxton he had many friends who were staggered to learn of his ending under such tragic circumstances. A businessman said, "He was one of the very best, and a citizen Australia might well be proud of" The body was taken to Adelaide by Mr. J. P. Traeger, and was buried alongside that of his father.
