COLLIVER
_Golden Wedding Notice 19 December 1899 There
are but few colonists up to the present time who besides the rare
distinction of celebrating their golden wedding, can at the same time
claim to have had the initial ceremony performed in the colony.
Amongst this number must be included Mr. and Mrs.J. Colliver, of Bardon
House, Norwood, who were married at Trinity Church, Adelaide, on
December 17, 1849 by the Rev. Dean Farrell. They experienced many of the
vicissitudes of early colonial life, including something of excitement.
Always desiring to direct his own fortune, Mr. Colliver embarked in
business ventures in the city and northern townships, as well as
Victoria. He was not proof against the excitement of the Victorian gold
diggings and tried his fortune on nearly every field, generally with
fair success. The whole of the children and grandchildren assembled on
Monday, December 18. to commemorate the golden wedding, and spent an
enjoyable time at the old home, where for the past 37 years the
venerable couple have resided. Interesting reminiscences of the early
days— the bullock-dray days—were recounted. There are three sons and 13
grandchildren.
