_18th Birthday Notice Burra Record 28 April 1953
Sixty friends were invited to celebrate "Vals" birthday on Saturday night, to a party at her home given by her parents, Mr and Mrs. J.L. Allen. Guests were received at the front stairway. Mrs Allen looking smart in floral marquisite and Val very sweet and dainty wearing aqua crepe, trimmed with lace and tiny black velvet bows. Music, games and dancing were enjoyed by the happy young people. Special musical items were rendered by Joan Fisher and Mary Best. Very many lovely presents, were received by the radiant guest of honour and a special thrill was a telephone call from Tenant Creek, wishing her "Many Happies". Also a telegram from brother Don at Port Augusta. The hostess, already famous for her suppers and hospitality, surpassed all previous parties this time. A beautiful cake, iced and decorated in pale pink, with 18 candles and silver trimmings was surmounted by a lovely pink sugar lady. Mr. John Deere proposed the "Happy Birthday" toast which was accompanied by musical honours. Val, in a delightful little speech responded and thanked her mother and father especially and everyone for giving her such a happy eighteenth birthday. Well after midnight, friends from the neighbouring towns and Burra left in their cars for home after a very lovely party.
