A FATAL ACCIDENT. Boy Falls from a Tree. A lad about 12 years of age, named Raymond March, son of Mr and Mrs. W. March, of Kooringa, was killed on Wednesday morning last, through falling from a very lofty gum tree near the old brewery premises. It seems the little chap was on his way to the Burra Public School when he made an attempt to secure a bird's nest at the top of the tree - upwards of thirty feet from the ground, when, by some means, he fell away, striking his head on a portion of the root of the tree, which was a few inches higher than the ground. The sufferer was taken to Dr. Caw's surgery and afterwards sent to the hospital but the lad died a few minutes after admission. The deceased was a bright lad and general sympathy is expressed to his parents in their very sad bereavement. The funeral took place on Thursday at the Kooringa cemetery.
THANKS. Mr and Mrs W. H. March and family, of Kooringa, wish to thank all kind friends for floral tributes and expressions of sympathy in their sudden and very sad bereavement.

McGorrery John
Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 16th January 1914 The death took place early Friday morning last in Adelaide of Mr. John McGorrery, who on the 22nd of last month was transferred from Streaky Bay to the Parkside Asylum for treatment, after being for some four months an inmate of the Bungalow private hospital. Mr McGorrery who was a member of J. McDouall Stuarts Trans Australian exploration party of nearly 53 years ago, had been in very indifferent health for some years past, and, until his removal to Streaky Bay in August last, was living at Calca station, with Mr. T.P. Cash, in whose employ he had been for many years previously. His death leaves only two members of the Stuart party living, viz., Mr. S. King of Kensington, and Mr. J. Billiatt, of England; another member Mr Heath Nash, having been found dead in a lane in Adelaide about three weeks ago, It was on October 16th, 1861 that the party of ten men and 71 horses set out from Adelaide, and on July 25th of the following year they planted the Union Jack on the northern shores of the continent. Next day the return journey was commenced upon, and six months later - January 21st 1863, the explorers again reached Adelaide, having covered a distance of some 5000 miles in the fifteen months. The return journey was a particularly arduous one, owing to the bad travelling nature of the country and the sickness of Stuart, who had to be carried in an improvised ambulance, slung between two horses, for 700 miles. Early last year a banquet was given in Adelaide to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the return of the party to that city, and at this each surviving member was presented with a gold medal, as a token of the occasion. Mr McGorrery, who was just upon 73 years of age at the time of his death, was born in Cooktown, County Throne, Ireland in 1841, and arrived in South Australia in 1850 with his parents. His father started business in Adelaide as a blacksmith and young John also followed this occupation, winning the championship of Australia as a shoer, and it was this capacity that he joined Stuart's exploration party. A Hundred on the Brown's Well railway was named McGorrery after the deceased.

GAY. Undertaker.
South Australian Register 12 April 1894 THE LATE MR. GEORGE MELROSE. In Mondays Register we noticed with regret the death of Mr. George Melrose, of Mount Pleasant. The deceased gentleman, who was eighty-seven years of age on December 22 last, was tne last survivor of the family of the late Mr. John Melrose, of Balerno, near Edinburgh, Scotland, and came to the colony in 1839 by the Palmyra. The Spence and Disher families and Sir William Milne were fellow-passengers. He was thus a colonist of over fiity-four years. He started sheep farming at the Bremer on a small scale six months after his arrival in the colony, and a little later in conjunction with the late Sir W. W. Hughes near Macclesfield; afterwards he farmed sheep at Mount Barker with the late Mr. Robert Lawson of Padthaway; then he removed to the Rhine (part of the present Rosebank property). Wanting more room as his flocks increased, he went exploring for runs. Finding all the best of the then termed 'North country' taken up, he went up the Murray in 1846, and took up the Lake Victoria country, being the first to form a station in that district. Having some difficulty with the New South Wales Government about leases, he finally abandoned Lake Victoria, and returned to the Rnine, and subsequently formed his head station at Rosebank, where he lived for thirty-six years. In later years he purchased Franklin Harbour, Borthwick Brae, and Ulooloo Runs. Mr. Melrose held high rank among those who have assisted in the making of South Australia. Arriving here in the infancy of the colony he, as is shown above, lost no time in turning to the best account the opportunities afforded him for acquiring an independence. He devoted his energies to the work of a settler, and set an example well worthy of imitation in the present day by those who have sought a home amongst us. He has lived and laboured here, and the success he achieved has been thoroughly well earned. A stern independence, indomitable courage and perseverance, and an eminently practical nature were his prominent characteristics. He was a man of strong individuality but great simplicity of character, and ever a vigorous enemy to any show of pride or vanity. He made several early small exploring expeditions, principally east of the River Murray, on one occasion undergoing considerable hardship for want of water. He was intimately acquainted with a great many of the pioneer colonists, in whose well being he always manifested much interest. When in his eighty-fourth year he accompanied some of the members of his family to Great Britain and the Continent. Until quite recently he enjoyed excellent health, and was able to ride on horseback a few weeks ago. His faculties remained wonderfully clear until he lost consciousness the day before his death, and almost to the end he was able to work out draught problems appearing in the Australasian, in which game he had taken a lifelong interest. He had been ailing during the last fortnight, but was able to get about till Friday morning, when he rose, and had his usual walk before breakfast. He appeared bright and cheerful at breakfast, and arranged to go for a drive at 11 o'clock, but he fainted in his chair at 10 o'clock and never rallied again. After over thirty hours' continuous sleep he passed very quietly away on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. In 1847 Mr. Melrose married Miss Thomson, a daughter of the late Mr. John Thomson, of Lily Bank. She died on October 31, 1887. Mrs. Melrose accompanied her husband to Lake Victoria in 1847, and was the first white woman to go up the River Murray. The deceased gentleman leaves five sons — Messrs. George T. Melrose, of Rosebank; James Melrose, of Franklin Harbour; John Melrose, of Ulooloo; Robert T. Melroae, of Rosebank; and Alexander Melrose (of Messrs. Homburg & Melrose), Adelaide— and three daughters — Mrs. Ferguson (widow of the late Dr. Ferguson), Mrs. Archibald MacDiarmid, and Mrs. H. H. Wigg. THE FUNERAL. Over fifty vehicles, besides about twenty horsemen, with residents from the district and many from Adelaide, Mount Barker, and other places, followed the deceased's remains to the grave on Tuesday. Behind the mourning carriage was Mr. John Moody, an old man who had been in the service of deceased for 44 years, driving the late Mr. Melrose's favourite horse and buggy. Amongst those present besides the members of the family were Messrs. David and Frank Thomson (brothers in-law), D. Thomson (nephew), Dr. H. H. Wigg and Mr. A. MacDiarmid (sons-in-law), Messrs. Lovel and Georgo Ferguson and Stanley Murray (grandsons), Mr. R. Barr Smith, Mr. William Murray, Hon. J. Warren, M.L.C., Messrs. A. S. Chapman (of Elder, Smith, & Co.), J. H. and A. J. Murray, R. R. MONTGOMERIE James Spottiswoode
Death Notice West Coast Sentinel 17th November 1917 MONTGOMERIE - On October 31st, at his residence, Walbina, Streaky Bay, James Spottiswoode (Spot) beloved husband of Elizabeth J Montgomerie, in his 62nd year; leaving a wife, three daughters and one son to mourn their sad loss.
Bereavement Notice West Coast Sentinel 17th November 1917 Mrs J.S. Montgomerie, and Family of Walbina, desire to sincerely thank all friends and relatives for letters, cards, telegrams and floral tributes, also personal expressions of heartfelt sympathy in their recent sad bereavement, especially Mr and Mrs Thos. Mudge and Nurse Foster for their unremitting kindness and attention. Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 3rd November 1917 Another of the pioneers has passed away, the death of Mr James Spottiswoode Montgomerie, of "Wallbana" five miles from Streaky Bay, taking place at his residence at 3p.m. on Wednesday, after an illness extending over many months. About eighteen months ago he was operated upon for a growth on the chin, and later in January last, the same trouble occasioned his visiting the city for further treatment. After some weeks he returned to the Coast, but little improvement in his condition took place, and for three month he has had the attendance of a trained nurse. Latterly he had been unable to speak, and his family and friends feel that death was a happy release to much suffering. He was in his 62nd year, being born at LeFevre Peninsula in August 1856, being the second son of Mr and Mrs Spotiswoode Montgomerie. He came to the West Coast when quite a child, and after the completion of his education was engaged in fencing and similar contracts with his brothers, Messrs J.R. and W.M. Montgomerie, for many years, after which they devoted themselves to mail contracting, having the contract from Port Lincoln to Eucla for some six years. Later the deceased, on his own account, held the Yardea and Streaky Bay mail contract, and subsequently that between Streaky and Fowler's Bays. He then took up "Wallbana" and resided there ever since. In 1883 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Schlink, of Flinders Island, and Mrs Montgomerie, three daughters (Mrs F.W. Betts, of Murat Bay; Mrs C.A. Murphy, of Eurelia; and Miss Alice Montgomerie) and one son (Mr Frank) survive him. The funeral took place to the Streaky Bay cemetery on Thursday afternoon, when a large and representative gathering paid their last respects. The pall bearers were Messrs H.F and A.E. Kelsh, B. Martin, J.H. Cotton, H. Old senr., and C Schlink, and the Rev. Father Kett conducted the service at the graveside. The mortuary arrangements were in the hands of Messrs O.M. and G.P. Willcock.
MONTGOMERIE William
Death Notice West Coast Sentinel 22nd June 1918 MONTGOMERIE - On the 18th June, at the residence of his sister, Mrs Thomas Mudge (Flinders Hotel), Streaky Bay, William Montague, dearly loved husband of Catherine Montgomerie, aged 57 years. Great is our grief, but God knows best, He has taken our loved one home to rest. Deeply mourned.
Mr William Montague Montgomerie, farmer, of Chercanabie, near Streaky Bay, whose death took place at the residence of his sister Mrs Thomas Mudge, Flinder's Hotel, streaky Bay, on the 18th instant, was the third son of the late Mr Spottiswoode Montgomerie, and was born at Port adelaide on the 7th May, 1861. He came to the district when only about two months old, his father then being overseer for the late Mr John Marchant, of Talia, and when a little over one year old he came to live at Cooeyana, near Streaky Bay, where his parents kept an accomodation house. When the township of Flinders (Streaky Bay) was surveyed, Mr Montgomerie went to reside at the Criterion hotel, with his father and mother. When old enought to work, he went out working on the sheep stations - fencing, shearing and contract work in conjunction with his two elder brothers, J.R and the late J.S. Montgomerie. In 1883 their tender was accepted for the government mail contracts from Port Lincoln to Eucla for three years, which was carried out successfully. The three brothers also had the mail contract from Port Lincoln to streaky Bay for another term of three years from 1886 and also contracted for the conveyance of mails between Streaky Bay and Yardea. The late Mr. Montgomerie subsequently took up land at Chercanabie, in the Hundred of Scott, where he had a large area cleared and put under crops, and where his hospitality was partaken of by a great number of his friends. He was for about three years licencee of the Ceduna hotel, Murat Bay, which business he carried on successfully. Being popular, he made a great number of friends. In 1907 he went to live on the farm, and lived there until failing health necessitated his removing to where medical assistance would be more easily available. The deceased gentleman had resided in the district nearly all his life. He was an experienced horseman, and took great interest in horses. He was exceptionally good natured, and all who knew him had a kindly feeling towards him for his generosity. For considerably over two years he had very bad health, which was borne with great fortitude and patience. this death has removed from the district one of the oldest and highly respected residents. In 1881 Mr Montgomerie married the second daughter of the late Mr. William Campbell, of Streaky Bay. He leaves a widow, five sons, and four daughters (Messrs W.S., of McClaren Vale; R.C. of Chercanabie; F.M. of Murat Bay; L.B of Adelaide Military camp; and T.A. of Chercanabie; Mrs W.G. Anderson of Hundred of Scott; Mrs C. McInerheney, of Murat Bay; Miss D.C. Montgomerie, of Murat Bay; and Miss F.A. of Chercanabie), to mourn their great loss. A special memorial service was conducted at the anglican church on Sunday last, when special hymns were sung and the Rev. Dainty in his sermon referred to the good qualities of the late Mr. Montgomerie. A large congregation was present.
