their sincere thanks to all those who assisted and sympathized with them in
their recent trouble; particularly Mr. and Mrs. J. Feltus for their great
kindness – friends in need are friends indeed.
Obituary Mr. W.H. Robbins On the 6th inst., the death took place at the
residence of Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Cotton, of Coolee (son-in-law and daughter respectively) of Mr. W. H. Robbins,
one of the pioneers of the West Coast. Deceased was 73 years of age. The late Mr. Robbins originally followed a seafaring life.
Coming to the west Coast he was for many years employed by Dr. Brown, Mr.
Marchant and Messrs W.R and A.G. Thompson, on Talia, Calca and other stations.
On the death of Mr. W.T. Thompson, of Calca, he took over the management of the
station, which position he held until the resumption of that property for
agricultural purposes. A district resident, in conversation, speaking of
deceased, referred to him as being “the last of the old squatting school”. He
was well known throughout the West Coast for his genial and hospitable nature,
and will be much missed by the small band of pioneers yet remaining. He leaves
a widow and a daughter (previously referred to); also several grandchildren. The Funeral took place on Monday last, and was largely
attended, the mortal remains being interred in the Streaky Bay Cemetery. The

Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 26th August 1916 Another of the West Coast pioneers has passed away, the death taking place at Coolee, Pidnippie, on Thursday of Mrs Robbins, relict of the late Mr H.W. Robbins, who was one of those associated with the very earliest development of this portion of the State. Mrs Robbins had been in a very low state of health for some time, so her demise was not altogether unexpected, but her loss will be none the less keenly felt by a very large circle of friends, all possible of whom paid a last tribute to her memory on Friday afternoon, when the funeral took place to the Streaky Bay cemetery. Mrs Robbins was born in Cornwall in October, 1839, and was therefore in her 77th year. She came to South Australia in 1864 on the ship Travillian, landing after a voyage of three months duration. Some few months after her arrival she went to Port Lincoln, where she met Mr Robbins, and in 1867 their marriage was celebrated at Trinity Church, Adelaide. The couple returned to the coast, and were stationed for twelve months at Dr, Brown's Mt Wedge station, and afterwards for twenty years at Calca station, then owned by Dr. Brown. Here Mr Robbins ultimately occupied the position of manager. In 1888 Mr and Mrs Robbins decided to take up farming pursuits and removed to the Hundred of Wrensfordsley, where they resided until twelve months ago, when the removed to the residence of their daughter (Mrs C Cotton) at Coolee. Mr Robbins' death took place four years ago. During the whole period od her residence at Coolee Mrs Robbins was a patient sufferer, practically an invalid and her fortitude and kindly nature were winning qualities in her personality. Mrs C. Cotton is the only daughter.

ROBERTS William Edward
Death Notice West Coast Sentinel 27th February 1914 The death of another old pioneer, in the person of Mr. William Edward Roberts, of Oakvale, took place on Tuesday last, at the age of 78 years. He was a resident of the coast for about 55 years, first at Fowler's Bay end and latterly at Oakvale. The funeral took place on Thursday, to Piednippie cemetery. Father Kelly officiating at the grave.
Death Notice West Coast Sentinel 13th March 1914 ROBERTS - On February 24th, at Oakvale, Streaky Bay, William Edward, in his 79th year. Fortified by the rites of his church. A colonist of 63 years. R.I.P. Mr and Mrs V.A. Roberts wish to thank all kind friends for their help and sympathy in their recent sad bereavement, especially Nurse McKenzie.
Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 6th March 1914 Mr William Edward Roberts, whose death we recorded last week as having taken place on Tuesday, 24th Ult., at Oakvale, was a colonist of 65 years and a resident of the West Coast of 59 years. He was born in London on February 17th., 1836, being, therefore, 78 years of age at the time of his death. He left England in the ship Artimesica in 1849, landing in Sydney the same year. He at once proceeded to Queensland, and there spent the first five years of his colonial life on large sheep stations. During this period he was successively engaged in sheep herding, hut building, shearing, fencing etc., and the life proved a very hard one, owing principally to the treacherous nature of the blacks, who were very wild at that time. The sheep had to be guarded both day and night to prevent ravages, and, despite every care, it was no unusual thing for the men so engaged to be robbed of all rations and to only narrowly escape death from the spears and boomerangs of the natives. Mr Roberts was very reminiscent on these escapades, and had many a good "yarn" to spin anent there. In 1854 he and his mate left Queensland, setting out for Adelaide on foot. Striking the river, they made bark canoes and paddles down the stream, ultimately reaching their goal. Soon after this Mr Roberts came over to the west Coast, and here spent an uninterrupted eight or nine years' sphere of labor at droving and other station work for Fowler's Bay station. The droving was principally between Port Lincoln and Fowler's Bay, over which distance he travelled many thousand sheep. As may be imagined, the recognised road was sometimes not even a track, and, here again, his experiences were varied, and it was only by constant resource to the bushman's well known ingenuity that he was able to get his bullock teams and flocks through to their destination. In 1863 he married to Mary Elizabeth Dowling at St. Patrick's church, West Terrace, by the Rev. John Smyth. The newly married pair left Adelaide on January 2nd, 1864, in the cutter Firefly (Captain Meperoy), and arrived at Point Bell fifteen days later. Here he signed on with Messrs Marrabell and Miller as shepherd, and from then on until the expiration of the leases in 1888 his time was occupied in the Fowler's Bay district. On the station was included in his work the supervision of the erection of the kangaroo yards, which proved such a boon to the squatters in the early seventies. Being of an industrious disposition, he never missed an opportunity of adding to his finances, and, when the 1888 leases were thrown open he selected about 80,000 acres of land between Streaky Bay and Calca - part of the original Maryvale station, then held by Mr. W.A. Horne. He stocked up the country with sheep, but soon found that the ravages of dogs and drought, were hard to combat against, and that it would be advisable to combine farming. Consequently, he divided a portion of the property between his three eldest sons, and he, with the remaining four, started on the balance of Oakvale. These pursuits were successfully carried on until 1907, when, owing to failing health, he was compelled to give up active life, and his two youngest sons then took over the place, and he resided there up till the time of his death. When his health failed him, different doctors were consulted, but senility had set in and they could do nothing. Some six months ago it was found advisable to procure the services of a nurse for him, and since then Nurse McKenzie had been in unremitting attendance on him. His wife pre-deceased him by six years. He was a devoted husband and father, and a man who made many friends. In his early days he was a record shearer, and was recognised as an exceptional man in connection with sheep. His hands for many years were in a crippled state, evidence of strenuous efforts he had put forward in effectively combating with a burning house. He had thirteen children, eight of whom are still living. The surviving sins are Messrs W.J, E.A., J.J. and P.C., of Calca; V.A. of Oakvale and G.P. of Petina; and daughters Mrs J.J. McDonald of Maryvale and Mrs D.P.McGregor of Western Australia. The grand-children number thirty.
ROBERTSON Adelaide Mary
_Death Notice Murray Pioneer 5 January 1950 ROBERTSON - On January 1, at her home, Robe Terrace, Medindie, Adelaide Mary Robertson, loved wife of the late Robert Robertson, of Chowilla Station. Obituary Notice Murray Pioneer 19 January 1950 Mrs R. Robertson, one of Earliest Pioneers On January 1, Mrs Robert Robertson, of Chowilla station, one of the River's most respected and oldest pioneer settlers, passed away at her home in Adelaide. Mrs Robertson, before her marriage at Christ Church, North Adelaide to Mr Robert Robertson, was Miss Adelaide Mary Harvey, and she spent her early life at Blanchetown. It was in the very earliest days of the district that Mr and Mrs Robertson made their home at Bookmark station (now Calperum). At that time the only landmark on what is now the town of Renmark was one of the Robertsons' sheep yards. In those days the only means of transport for goods was by bullock dray when the River was low. The nearest hospital was at Eudenda, and it was a long journey, when Mrs Robertson was taken in a buggy to that township, suffering from a severe attack of typhoid fever. Those were the days when Chaffey Bros. were just starting what is today the flourishing settlement of Renmark. The old coach then took 18 hours to travel from Morgan to Renmark in the capable hands of Fred Plush, charlie Schell, Tom Warrick, Jack McCormac and others. At a later date Mr and Mrs Robertson lived at Chowilla Station, where for many years fighting drought and being almost ruined by rabbit plagues, they persevered as this area was gradually improved. Mrs Robertson was of a most generous nature, and never a traveller passed without happy recollections of hospitality at the old station homestead. Mrs Robertson, whose husband predeceased her by more than 20 years, is survived by four sons and two daughters, Messrs William (Littlehampton), Robert (Hill End, N.S.W.), John Harper (O'Halloran Hill) and Douglas, of Chowilla and Adelaide, Mrs Cyril Lang, of Wiela via Renmark, and Mrs D.T. DuRieu (Renmark). There are 17 grand-children and eight great grand-children. Mrs Robertson's remains were laid to rest at the Renmark Cemetery.

RUMBELOW Samuel
Death Notice The Register 20 April 1920 DROWNED AT PORT ELLIOT. Gallant Would-be Rescuer's Fate. PORT ELLIOT, April 19. Mr. Samuel Rumbelow, aged 27 years, a member of one of the oldest families of Encounter Bay, was drowned at Port Elliot this morning. The young man, who was a popular conductor of touring parties between the seaside resorts of Encounter Bay, Victor Harbour, Port Elliot, and Middleton, had taken a lady visitor at Port Elliott (Miss Meryl Duall, of Adelaide) down the rocks to enable her to obtain a photograph of 'Nature's Eye,' Green Bay. The lady became giddy and fell into the water. Mr. Rumbelow bravely jumped in to endeavour to rescue her, but a wave carried both out to sea. Miss Duall was taken out of the water 10 minutes later in Green Bay by visitors, who endeavoured with little success to promote artificial respiration. Dr. S. J. Douglas, of Port Victor, was summoned in the meantime, and he continued the efforts at resuscitation for three-quarters of an hour, at the end of which time signs of vitality became apparent, and the lady recovered consciousness. Mr. Rumbelow, however, lost his life. When the first wave had spent its force he was seen standing up to the waist in water. He threw off his coat, managed to clamber on to a rock, and stood there for a moment; but another breaker washed over the rock, and once more took him out to sea. The body was later washed ashore in Green Bay. The deceased was the eldest son of Mr. Godfrey Rumbelow. A brother enlisted with the A.I.F., and was killed in the war. An uncle of the deceased, Mr. Malin Rumbelow, was drowned near Encounter Bay several years ago.

RUTHERFORD Elizabeth B.
Obituary Notice West Coast Sentinel 17th April 1915 Mrs E.B. Rutherford A colonist of 65 years, in the person of Mrs Elizabeth B. Rutherford, relict of the late Mr. W.T. Rutherford, died at Streaky Bay public hospital on Wednesday morning early. She had been ailing since some five years ago, when she met with an accident, and about six months ago became an inmate of the hospital. and was there off and on up to the time of her death, for which senile decay was responsible. The deceased was 82 years of age in November last, being born in Morganchurch-town, Cornwall, in 1832. In 1850, when 18 years of age, she decided to immigrate to Australia, and six months later, after a placid voyage, landed at Port Adelaide from the ship Cressy. She first took a situation at the Royal Oak Hotel, Adelaide, but left this three weeks later, as her mother and the remainder of the family (five children, the father being dead) arrived from the old country too. In company with her mother she carried on a dairying business in Adelaide for some two years, when she married Mr Joseph Budd, but four years later her husband went to the Victorian goldfields and died there. She was home with her mother for a further ten years, when she again entered into matrimony, with Mr Walter Turnbull Rutherford, and the couple immediately proceeded to Bordertown, being employed on Binnie station for two years, during which period the first child ( Mr Walter D. Rutherford, now of Western Australia) was born. They then lived in turn at North Adelaide, Gawler, Kanaka (north of Port Augusta) and North Adelaide again, for various periods, during which time three sons and one daughter were born, and in 1870 went to Port Lincoln and took up a farm, in company with a man named Chas. Edwards at Warrow. Two years later they disposed of their interest in the farm to the partner and moved on to Talia station, where the family worked on the wells for three years. They then went back to Adelaide, and in 1878 Mrs Rutherford followed her husband to Streaky Bay, where he had secured a position with Mr Anthony Schlink. Her passage to the Coast was made in the sailing craft Magnet. They lived first at Gibson's Peninsula (where Mr. C.H. Williams homestead now stands), then at Yalabingie and Calca, after which the family removed to Melbourne for a couple of years, but came back to Witera, and then for twelve months, Mrs Rutherford resided in Streaky Bay, her husband meanwhile being up at Kokatha. The family next lived in Chandada for some years, the station then being under the charge of the late Mr Alex Murray. Mr Rutherford afterwards went into the droving business, and the family homes was established at Streaky Bay; his work took him as far afield as Queensland, and in 1894 he died there, and since then the old lady had resided with her third son , Mr William F. Rutherford. The two sons mentioned (Messrs Walter and William) together with a son by her first husband (Mr Richard Budd, of Adelaide) are the only ones of her children who survive. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, to the Streaky Bay cemetery, Rev. Father O'Halloran conducting the burial service. The mortuary arrangements were carried out by Messrs O.M. and G.P. Willcock.
