RUNDLE
_Ninety Ninth Birthday Notice Advertiser & Register 6 March 1931 Mrs
G. Rundle celebrated her 99th birthday, at Sevenhills, on March 3, at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Penna. Mrs. Rundle retains an
interest in life, and can relate many stories of the joys and
hardships of the early days. Before her marriage she was a Miss Moyses,
and was born at Truro, Cornwall, on March 3, 1832. In August. 1848, the
family came to Australia, in the sailing ship Rajah of Leith, arriving
at Port Adelaide in January 1849. The family settled at Burra; at that
time houses of any kind were scarce, so they lived in a hut, situated in
the creek. About two years later Mr. Moyses took up land at Penwortham,
and Miss Moyses was married to Mr. George Rundle, in the little
historic Anglican Church of St. Marks, Penwortham, by the Rev. John
Charles Bagshaw. A fortnight later, Mr. Rundle left for the new
Victorian gold fields, where he met with success. Ten months later he
returned to South Australia, and took up farming land at White Hut, four
miles from Clare, but the following year he went back to the gold
diggings. Finding that the outlook was bright, he returned for his wife,
and together they spent two years on the goldfield. Many and varied
were their experiences during that time, the most notable being the
revolt at Ballarat. In 1856 they decided to return to the White Hut
property, and resided there for the next six years, afterwards removing
to Penwortham. Soon after Mr. Rundle, under arrangement with Mr. J. H.
Angas, left home to take cattle to the River Darling, and later on met
his death at Wentworth. Mrs. Rundle remained at Rosedale, Penwortham,
until 1890, when she removed to Clare and resided there for 18 years,
when, owing to her advancing years, she went to Sevenhill (or Seven
Hills as it was spelt then) to reside with her daughter, Mrs. W. H.
Penno, where she has since remained. Of a family of nine sons and two
daughters, only three survive. They are Mr. J. M. Rundle, of Payneham,
Mr. W. H. Rundle, of Rhodesia, South Africa, and Mrs. Penno, of
Sevenhill. There are a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Rundle was connected with the church, and made hosts of friends,
many of whom have long since left the district.
