CALDWELL Juliet
_Death & Funeral Notice Naracoorte Herald 6th January 1949 CALDWELL - On January 3, at her residence, Robertson Street, Naracoorte, Juliet, daughter of the late Juliet and William Walter Caldwell. Aged 88 years. CALDWELL - The friends of the late Juliet Caldwell are respectfully informed that her remains were peacefully laid to rest in the Naracoorte Cemetery on Wednesday, 5/1/49, Rev. J.H. Price officiating. PLATT BROS. Funeral Directors Naracoorte MISS J. CALDWELL PASSES The passing of Miss Juliet Caldwell at her residence, Robertson Street, Naracoorte, last Monday, takes the minds of the older residents back to her years of activity in public and business life in Naracoorte before and during World War 1. She was one of the originators of the Cheer-Up society in Naracoorte, and her business premises were the hub of activity during 1924-1919, when huge hampers were packed each week. These were forwarded to the Cheer-Up Hut that was doing such a fine work for our local lads at that time. The late Miss Caldwell was also interested in politics, and was an active member of the Women's Branch of the then Liberal Union, in the time when the late Hons. John Livingstone and Tom MacCallum represented this district, and her interest and work was still active when the late Mr V.G. Petherick, M.P., was elected as our member. She joined the Education Department of South Australia at an early age, and taught for a short term at Lochaber and for many years at the Stewart's Range School, where she taught whole families of children from the oldest to the youngest. For many years she rode on a bicycle from Stewart's Range to Naracoorte when the lack of drainage at that time made the roads almost impassable in the winter. On retiring from school teaching she acquired the bakery and catering business (now conducted by Messrs W.T. Morris and Sons) from the late Alexander Johnston, and after successfully carrying it on for some 17 years, she retired from business in 1925, disposing of the business to Mr. W.S. Thomson, and has since lived with her brothers, the late A. and D. Caldwell, and her sister, the late Miss Annie Caldwell, who predeceased her by just three weeks. With her sister she was a regular attendant at worship in St. Andrew's presbyterian Church, Naracoorte, until failing health precluded them from attending. The late Juliet Caldwell was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 15, 1860, and landed in australia with her parents when just a few months old. She lived with her parents in Mount Gambier, and later on in Naracoorte and was the third daughter of the late Juliet and William Walker Caldwell, and was the last surviving member of a fine old Scottish family. She and her brother Archibald were educated at Strathdownie Station, then owned by by the late William McEachern (cousin of Mrs Caldwell) by a tutor by the name of Stuart brought out from Scotland. Deceased brothers and sisters of the late Miss Caldwell were Mesdames T. Farmer, S.R. Baptie, Misses Helen, Mary, Georgina and Annie Caldwell, and Messrs. Archibald and Dugald Caldwell. Mesdames Jean M.C. Anderson, H.R.K. Tidswell and R.K. Addems are nieces and Messrs A.C. and J.C. Farmer nephews of the late Miss Caldwell.
