JORDAN George Wilmer
Death Notice Burra Record 11 July 1900 JORDAN— On July 7, 1900, at Kooringa, S A., George Wilmer Jordan, the dearly beloved husband of Ann Jordan, after a painful illness. Aged 63 years. Farewell, my husband dear farewell. Adieu to thee, adieu ! And we, your dearly-loved ones all, Say farewell, dear, to you. Though you are gone and we are left, To tread this vale alone. We hope to meet again in heaven. With Christ, before God's throne. Obituary We have to record this week the death of a very old and respected resident in the person of Mr. George W. Jordan. The deceased arrived in the colony on Jan. 16, 1854, from London in the ship "Corromandel" when only 18 years of age, and a year later came to Burra where he carried on various avocations, making himself very popular with all whom he came in contact with; he was quiet, unassuming, but a right good fellow, conscientious, and trustworthy. He was a resident of Burra for 45 years, and could tell some exceedingly interesting tales of the early days. His illness came on about three months ago, through cancer in the left cheek, which caused much pain. Operations were performed, but as is usual in similar cases, no permanent relief was afforded. About five weeks ago he took to his bed, from which he never rose again. He was a member of the Loyal Aberdeen Lodge for 28½ years. The deceased died at his residence, Kooringa, on Saturday morning, July 7. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon in most unfavourable weather, but still a number of friends with vehicles attended, and formed a long cortege to the cemetery. The Salvation Army was attired in funeral regalia and headed the procession under their flag, followed by members of the Aberdeen and Kooringa Lodges of Oddfellows. The funeral service in the mortuary was indeed an impressive one, and the eloquent prayer offered up by Lieutenant Gullick will ever remain in the minds of all who heard it. Captain Deeble, who led the service, spoke fervently and impressively, and the way in which the service was conducted is worthy of special mention. After the coffin had been placed in the mortuary the hymn 'Hiding in Thee' was sung, and after prayer by the lieutenant 'We shall walk through the Valley' was sung by the assemblage. At the express wish of the deceased the children connected with the Army sung 'Simply Trusting.' At the grave side the hymn 'Shall we gather at the River' was sung as the coffin was being lowered. At the conclusion of the service the captain, in prayer, on behalf of the Army presented themselves to God for fresh consecration. The deceased leaves a wife and two sons George and Harry (Western Australia), and one daughter Mrs. Ivett (Cheltenham). A memorian service will be conducted in the Salvation Army Barracks on Sunday night next, when the last messages of the departed to the people of Burra will be delivered. THANKS. I wish to sincerely thank all kind friends for their sympathy extended to me during the illness ot my late husband, and to all who in any way assisted in the funeral arrangements. Ann Jordan.
