LLOYD Frederick
Death Notice West Coast Sentinel 6th April 1918 DEATH of MR. F. LLOYD It was briefly mentioned in these columns last issue that the pioneer of Smoky Bay had passed away at the residence of Mr. Ernest Lovelock on Sunday morning, March 24th, in the person of Mr. Frederick Lloyd, at the age of 49 years and 10 months. For over 20 years the deceased had lived at Smoky Bay, where his genial personality and upright character had endeared him to all. Mr. Lloyd was one of the many Yorke Peninsula farmers who came to the West Coast in the early nineties. Born at Strathalbyn on May 25th, 1868, as a small child he went with his parents to Maitland Y.P. After a brief term at Maitland the family moved to Cuttamulka. The stay here was very short, for Yorketown became their abiding place while Mr.Lloyd was still a boy. It was here that Mr. Lloyd received his education at the public school. In early youth he went to Victoria, where he worked for a few years on the irrigation system then in operation. Returning to Yorketown he married the eldest daughter of the late Mr W. Hewton, of Honiton. The young couple set up farming on their own account in the Strathalbyn district. Here they remained for three years with varying success. In the early part 0f 1905 Mr. Lloyd relinquished the farm at Strathalbyn and chartering a sailing vessel he placed his stock and implements aboard and set sail for Smoky Bay. Although not the first settler, for a brother-in-law had preceded him, he was the first to remain and make a home for himself and wife in that wilderness known as the Wallanippie scrub. Only a man with indomitable courage and a great tenacity of purpose could have endured the privations of those days. There were no roads, the settler having to cut his way through heavy scrub to his block. Water had to be carted many miles from old station wells. If provisions gave out the settler had to subsist he best way he could until a sailing vessel happened along. While preparing the land for the first crop, Mr Lloyd camped at Mudamuckla, and Mrs Lloyd lived in a tent at Wallnippie wells and looked after the stock. The first years were filled with toil, but gradually the heavy scrub gave place to waving fields of corn. A home was made in the Hundred of Wallanippie three miles distant from the landing. Little by little more land was added to the original section until Mr. Lloyd became the largest land-holder in the district. He was the largest employer of labor in the district, and was invariably referred to as the "boss", a term which denoted respect and liking. About four years ago Mr. Lloyd put his land out on the share-system, and went to the landing to live. Here he acted as harbor-master, shipping agent and agent for several city firms, besides carrying on a general store business. On the death of his father (the late Mr. Benjamin Lloyd) he severed his connection with Smoky Bay landing and went to live with his mother at Lower Mitcham. Mr. Lloyd still retained his farms and his presence on the Coast at the time of his death was connected with business concerning them. Mr. Lloyd's cheery disposition, greatness of heart, and open-handed hospitality won for him a large circle of friends. His generosity was a bye-word. No one appealed to his sympathies in vain. Without staying to consider whether the case was deserving or not he was ever ready to give away his last shilling. The elements were so mixed in him, That all nature might stand up and say, "Here was a man! Shall I e're behold his like again." The remains were interred in the Carawa cemetery on Monday afternoon March 25th in the presence of many life-long friends, who extend their heart felt sympathy to the sorrowing widow and sister.
Thanks Notice West Coast Sentinel 20th April 1918 Mrs Lloyd of Smoky Bay, desires to thank all kind friends and relatives for letters, cards, floral tributes, and telegrams in her recent bereavement.
